Task Quotient

Have you ever said, “I just don’t feel like doing that right now”? We each have an internal rhythm that tries to regulate the task types that intrinsically motivate us (tasks that we engage in for enjoyment value, not for external rewards). The Task Quotient is a unique and simple online assessment that quickly determines what task types a job calls for and what task types an individual prefers.

By ensuring a match between the two, we can create alignment between jobs and people. When jobs and people are not aligned it leads to decreased productivity, stress, poor performance and eventually burnout.

The Task Quotient concept is based upon research conducted by Dr. Kevin Gazzara for completion of his doctoral dissertation. He set out to understand how to determine and align an employee’s ideal task mixture at work to maximise individual productivity and job satisfaction (Copyright 2002). The Task Quotient was developed to assist people find the right “fit” in the business by aligning their preferred task mixture to their roles.

Task Quotient looks at the job and the individual separately and determines the blend of task types preferred by each. This blend is determined by three percentages for each of the three task types:

Routine Tasks
Highly predictable tasks that must be accomplished immediately.

Troubleshooting Tasks
Highly unpredictable tasks that must also be accomplished immediately.

Project Tasks
Highly predictable tasks, that do not have to be accomplished immediately.

The TQ report will clearly show the blend the job requires and the blend the individual prefers, making it simple to compare the three and establish alignment between individuals and their roles.

Creating a work environment where the team member’s natural task preferences are aligned with thier role will raise the level of motivation and satisfaction. Aligning tasks to match an individual’s preferred TQ can happen at an individual level or through shared and rebalanced tasks at the group level. Understanding the balance of task types that motivates people and allows their internal rhythm to regulate the timing, sequence, and duration of these tasks creates a high motivation environment that produces superior results.
